At a few minutes past midnight tomorrow, I’ll be 40 – which may surprise some, given my boyish (good) looks, or would have until I sprouted a beard these last weeks (a holiday hangover). Not sure what to make of it really. Last year I was planning to invite everyone I know to a desert island somewhere near spain, but the obligatory months’ notice I would have needed to get all those excuses slipped away, and so it’s going to be “no biggie” bar any romantic surprises my other half is planning and hoping to see friends in london next weekend. Trichet (or rather a former colleague I can guess at from the style) penned an important article in thursday's financial times, which basically answered the question posed by the economist a few weeks ago about which will be the first central bank to raise interest rates. Trichet’s rather clear answer was “us”. As the anchoring of inflation expectations is the ecb’s strongest weapon against inflation, this is an important theme. Given that the most obvious course of action to deal with the massive debt most of the western world now finds itself lumbered with will be to inflate it away, there will be a point soon when action will need to follow words if that course is to be avoided.…

Like rabbit's friends and relations, mine are simply too many to keep in touch with. They weren't once upon a time, but the hours I used to spend writing letters and emails have simply disappeared, and not even facebook helped. I’m starting anew therefore, and blogging my way to your hearts. It will be a challenge: the art of making the instant recollection and comment interesting and personal enough for you to get to the end of is a tough one, but please tune in often to see if I’ve got what it takes....
